The Media Innovation Circle#3 took place on June 25 with a talk by Eva Brooks, Professor of Digital Media at University of Aalborg (Denmark),  followed by a participated discussion on the topic “Designing for play with physical and digital media: from tools and methods to approach and mindset”, moderated by Mónica Aresta, a DigiMedia Researcher.

The video is already available on DigiMedia YouTube channel. Watch HERE. We invite you to subscribe the channel.

Eva Brooks is Professor in IT-based Design, Learning and Innovation at the Department of Culture and Learning, Aalborg University, Denmark. She is the Director of the research laboratory Xlab – Design, Learning, Innovation. Her research has a design focus on social interaction, and the use and development of digital technology and their implications for play and learning. Her research also includes an innovation dimension, where she applies a design-oriented approach to co-creative processes with children. She has been involved in several research projects concerning children’s participation, play, and learning in state-of-the-art technology settings; for example, related to computational thinking, digital play, and digital game-based interactions. Currently, her research also has a focus on teachers’ professional digital competence grounded in creative workshops where the learning is participative, collaborative and peer oriented.

Abstract: The presentation focuses on the question of how collaborative explorations as a method and mindset can inform the design of media technology to reinforce innovative play and learning. The research laboratory Xlab – design, learning, innovation will be introduced addressing its work on enhancing children’s participation and collaboration through exploration, with aims of achieving pedagogical innovation and change. At the same time, the intent is to support researchers and practitioners to find new problems and understandings of educational practices for exploration and pedagogical innovations as a foundation for design of media technology. This work, which relies upon insights gained during empirical work with children for several decades, has resulted in a workshop methodology that combines principles and approaches from co-design and playful learning. The methodology reinforces children’s creativity, imagination, and social interaction with peers during collaborative tasks and represents a new approach to involve children in the design of media innovations. Thus, the presentation recommends guidelines for designing interactions that include media technology to foster creative expressions in children, highlighting the role of collaborative explorations combining digital tools and a ‘making’ mindset where children can act as protagonists.

The article “Building Trust in Digital Platforms for Sharing Collaborative Lifestyles in Sustainable Contexts ” by Raissa Sales (DigiMedia PhD Student), Ana Carla Amaro (DigiMedia Researcher) and Vania Baldi (DigiMedia Researcher) was published in the journal “Comunicação e Sociedade”.

Abstract

The term “sharing economy” is intended to identify a set of social relations, digitally me-diated, based on the principles of reciprocity and trust. However, such principles must result from the technological and design requirements of the platforms used where users deposit their personal data, insert information about interests and daily practices, communicate with strang-ers and, in this way, create personal bonds. The study hereby presented aims to identify a set of guidelines for building trust in the context of digitally mediated sharing of collaborative lifestyles, on platforms that promote the sharing of experiences in sustainable contexts. Within the scope of this study, sharing collaborative lifestyles means a non-monetary social exchange of knowledge, skills, accommodation, and food. The analyzed platforms — Volunteers Base, The Poosh, and WWOOF Portugal — are non-commercial organizations that promote experiences in educational projects in eco villages, natural construction projects in rural areas, permaculture projects on farms, among others. A multi-case and documentary study of the terms and policies published by these digital platforms was carried out. These regulatory documents were submitted to content analysis, using the Iramuteq and MAXQDA software. From this analysis, 20 guidelines emerged, in three categories: “practices and conduct”, “conditions” and “security and privacy”, which can guide users and platforms in the construction of digitally mediated sharing relationships in a transparent and reliable way.

The book chapter “Gamifying Soft Skills: a Theoretical Framework” by André Ribeiro, Carlos Santos (DigiMedia Researcher) and Luis Pedro (DigiMedia Researcher) was published in the book Gaming in Action, within the Gaming in Action – engaging adult learners with games and gamification StrategicPartnership project which has been funded with support from the European Commission.

Introduction
The present study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of digital badges-based strategies in motivating students to engage in extra-curricular tasksand how we can link them to the transversal competencies they helpdevelop. We will succinctly go over the various key topics that make upthe broader framework of this study in order to understand how micro-credentials and badges come together and how they can benefit researchon gamification and education. Afterwards we will surmise how thesecome into play for our pilot study. This research will be conducted at theUniversity of Aveiro (UA), Portugal. From implementing digital badges inMassive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to gamifying features on theircampus’ website, the UA supports research on current strategies ofcommunication and service design (Araújo et al., 2017, 2018). This isbecause universities should aim to provide their graduates not only withthe distinctive curricula offered by their courses, but also with thenecessary preparation for a fruitful transition to the job market throughthe use of validated and recognised micro-credentials for theirextracurricular efforts and accomplishments.

The article “A framework proposal for digital interventions in perinatal education: the result of a content analysis to WHO intra-partum care recommendations ” by Carla V. Leite (DigiMedia PhD Student) and Ana Margarida Almeida (DigiMedia Researcher) was published in the Special Issue: Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights: Towards Universal Health Coverage Policy and Programming of the International Journal of Human Rights in Healthcare (IJHRH).

Abstract

Purpose: This research proposes a framework to guide the development and analysis of digital interventions, namely, through mobile applications, regarding labor and birth. By complying with current scientific evidence, this paper aims to contribute to the safeness and completeness of perinatal health education targeting expectant parents.

Design/methodology/approach: A content analysis was conducted on a document containing World Health Organization guidelines for intra-partum, considering the following categories: timeframe, care options, category of recommendation, to create a data set clearly distinguishing between recommendations and non-recommendations. Context-specific and research-context recommendations, details from dosages, measurements and timings, infant care and non-immediate postpartum topics were considered out of the scope of this study.

Findings: The results were summarized in a table, ready to be used as a data set, including the following 16 care options ranging from health, well-being and/or rights: respect, communication, companionship, pregnant person’s monitoring, status, fetal monitoring, pain relief, pain management, amenities, labor delay prevention, progress, freedom of choice, facilitation of birth, prevention of postpartum hemorrhage, umbilical cord care and recovery. These were distributed across six timeframes: always, admission, first, second and third stage of labor and immediate postpartum. In addition, recommendations and non-recommendations are displayed in different columns.

Originality/value: This transdisciplinary research intends to contribute to: future research on perinatal education; the creation of digital interventions, namely, m-health ones, targeting expectant parents by providing a framework of content coverage; the endorsement of the rights to Information and to decision-making. Ultimately, when put into practice, the framework can impact self-care through access to perinatal education.

Abstract:

In a world where interaction with digital devices is inevitable, interaction paradigms have led us in various directions but, in most cases, have seen little change since the 1980´s. What happens when we go beyond mediation through the, widely known, windows, icons, menus and pointing devices and bring the interaction with digital interfaces closer to our actions and behaviour in the physical world?

This talk will hopefully challenge and enable us to put into perspective various studies with different views on how extended reality has helped bridge the digital and physical realm and how it has found its way into specific use cases such as learning and therapeutic contexts.

Inserted in the European Green Week, the GreenWeek @UA is a Europe-wide event where works carried out at the UA that seek, through new approaches, to alert young students to the importance of sustainability, were presented.
