Carla V. Leite, Daniel Carvalho, Sofia Nunes and Ana Margarida Almeida from DigiMedia and Ivone Almeida from CIDTFF, won HEALTHINF 2021 Best Poster Award with a poster entitled Digital Inclusion of Nursing Home Residents: A Usability Evaluation of the Digital Kiosk siosLIFE™.

The presentation of the poster is available HERE.

HEALTHINF is part of BIOSTEC, the 14th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies.

HEALTHINF 2021 took place from 11 to 13 February 2021 in online streaming. The purpose of the International Conference on Health Informatics is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in the specification, design, development and application of information and communication technologies (ICT) to healthcare and medicine in general and to the support of persons with special needs in particular. Big data, networking, graphical interfaces, data mining, machine learning, pattern recognition and intelligent decision support systems are just a few of the technologies and research areas currently contributing to medical informatics. Mobility and ubiquity in healthcare systems, physiological and behavioral modeling, standardization of health records, procedures, and technologies, certification, privacy and security are some of the issues that medical informatics professionals and the ICT industry and research community in general are addressing to further promote ICT in healthcare.

Lucía Ballesteros-Aguayo, Professor in the Audiovisual Communication and Advertising Department of the University of Seville (Spain), will be developing her research in DigiMedia together with Professor Vania Baldi within the Cyberculture research group for three months (01/10/20 – 30/12/20).

During her research stay, she will be focusing on the post-truth in times of pandemic, addressing latent issues in today’s digital society such as fake news, information manipulation, hoaxes or misinformation, and providing alternatives and detection mechanisms in relation to the so-called “alternative truths”. All of them, issues that concern public opinion and that are of great interest to supranational institutions such as the EU (see the Grupo de Trabajo East Stratcom, the Action Plan against Disinformation or the High Level Group (HLEG) on fake news and online disinformation).

The PhD defense of Hélder Caixinha, a collaborator of the DigiMedia team, took place on 30 September, at 2:30 pm. Hélder was a PhD student in the Doctoral Programme in Multimedia in Education and presented a project entitled: Competências para o e-Learning 2.0 dos estudantes à entrada no Ensino Superior.

The supervisor of the research project is an integrated member of the Research Centre, Professor Fernando Ramos.

We congratulate Hélder Caixinha and his supervisor.

Carlos Santos was the general coordinator of the multidisciplinary team responsible for the creation of the new portal of the University of Aveiro and Ana Margarida Almeida was the coordinator of the evaluation team – https://www.ua.pt/pt/portal/. Being one of the institution’s main communication channel, visited by around 3 million people every year, the Portal includes different communication strategies and new features and functionalities.

This project involved an extended group of people from the University of Aveiro (professors, students, technical assistants) that worked for 18 months developing different dimensions: communication, design, technology and evaluation.

Phase 1 (February 2019 – May 2019) consisted of the transformation of the top menu of the webpage. During Phase 2 (June 2019 – July 2020) the new Editor and the Portal’s technology were developed to support the needs of the sub webs. This work involved the migration of 178 sub webs, about 18000 pages of information and 300 people. To allow a good transition process, 7 training sessions were organized and more than 200 clarifications of doubts.

The success of this project depended on the dedication of an internal multidisciplinary team. Well done!
