The Impact Plan, a tool to support the anticipation of impact of projects designed by Digimedia’s member Catarina Lelis, is one of the activities that is part of the Inner Development Goals Conference (IDG2024), made available on their Story & Collaboration Garden. This is a feature available on the conference’s website, which is taking place on 16-18 October, in Stockholm, Sweden. At the Story & Collaboration Garden, registered participants can search for projects, resources and ideas connected to the IDG framework.

The 16th International Conference on Education Technology and Computers (ICETC 2024) and The 15th International Conference on Distance Learning and Education (ICDLE 2024) took place from 18th to 21th of September, 2024 and gathered a global audience of researchers, educators, and practitioners from various sectors of education technology and computer science. The conference provided a valuable platform for sharing ideas, research insights, and best practices in the field of education technology.

Raquel Magalhães Cabral, a DigiMedia PhD student, presented the “SUNRISE App: A Tool to Validate the Characteristics of an Infocommunicational Model Capable of Potentiating Social and Emotional Education for High School Students.” Co-authored by professors and master students, prof. Dr. Oscar Mealha (from Digimedia), prof. Dr. Vania Carlos (from DEP/UA), prof. Dr. Cristina Mercader (from Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona) and the master students: Bruna Riba, João Neves and Tiago Paralta (Porto University), this research paper explored the potential of technology to enhance social and emotional education.

During the conference, Raquel Magalhães Cabral’s presentation was recognized as the best oral presentation of the session about “The Diverse Applications of Digital Tools and Platforms in Education”. It was evaluated based on criteria such as applicability, originality, significance, visual aids, English delivery, and timeliness. This recognition highlights the quality and impact of her research and her ability to effectively communicate her findings to a diverse audience.

Renata Frade, a PhD Student and researcher at DigiMedia, was one of the women interviewed by the newspaper Público. Cláudia Ortet, Francisco Regalado and Tânia Ribeiro, PhD students from DigiMedia (Information and Communication in Digital Platforms), recently presented their research at the 26th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCII2024). The conference took place in Washington D.C. from June 29 to July 4, 2024.

During the session on “Digital Empowerment of Senior Citizens to Promote an Active and Healthy Ageing,” chaired by Professor Ana Isabel Veloso, Francisco Regalado (in-person) presented two papers, and Cláudia Ortet (online) another one, respectively:

In a complementary session on “New Media Use in the Everyday Life of Older People – I,” chaired by Professor Eugène Loos, Francisco (in-person) presented a third paper:

Tânia Ribeiro (in-person) presented her research during the session on “Playful Experiences: Design and Impact,” chaired by Professor Daniel Říha. Her presentations included:

It is worth noting that the Papers@USA FLAD Scholarship made the in-person participation of Francisco and Tânia possible.

HCII 2024 is a premier venue for disseminating and exchanging cutting-edge scientific knowledge in both theoretical and practical aspects of Human-Computer Interaction. The conference proceedings are available at https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs .

The DigiMedia PhD student, Anabela Brandão, took part in the X Viseu Educa Forum to present the results of a literature review carried out as part of the thesis project “Adoption of tools with artificial intelligence in education: a study of the impact on teachers and students”, of her doctorate in Multimedia in Education. Anabela presented in the panel “AI at the service of learning”, in this Forum organized by the Viseu City Council and the Training Center of the Viseu Schools Association.

This presentation addressed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in an educational context, which raises multiple questions for primary and secondary school teachers. Teachers should understand AI, reflect on the ethical issues raised by these tools in an educational context and find appropriate strategies that allow them to use these tools in a way that is not only ethical and safe, but also, with pedagogical value for teaching and learning processes. Anabela Brandão hopes to have contributed to the reflections of the audience.

The members of the DigiMedia Scientific Committee met for one day, to participate in different teambuilding activities. 23 members of the Scientific Committee met at PCI – Creative Science Park, in Ílhavo, on July 5, 2024. This was an opportunity to rethink the future of our Research Unit, bringing up new ideas of possible projects and networks.

Tânia Ribeiro, a PhD student from the Doctoral Program in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms at the University of Aveiro (UA), has received the SILVER Award at the 2024 “HCI Student Design Competition” with the project “Creating Empathic Characters: A Method”. This brainstorming tool, which is an outcome of her PhD research, is designed to help creating characters that effectively communicate empathy in digital games, a project under the supervision of Professor Ana Isabel Veloso (UA) and Peter Brinson, Professor of Practice from the University of Southern California.

The selection process was overseen by a distinguished seven-member international jury composed of experts from various academic institutions, ensuring a rigorous and impartial evaluation. The award was presented during the Opening Plenary Session of the HCI International 2024 conference, on Monday, 01 July 2024, from 18:30 to 20:00 EDT in Washington, DC, USA (HCI International).

This recognition highlights DigiMedia’s ongoing research and development in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) while emphasizing the importance of empathy in digital game character design, enhancing user experience in digital platforms, and contributing to the broader field of HCI.

Digimedia member Catarina Lelis was one of the University of Aveiro’s lecturers selected to represent the institution at the ECIU University Forum 2024, in Kaunas, Lithuania. Under the theme “Education for a sustainable and resilient society”, the meeting raised a few questions and proposed multiple ways to find answers. The event constituted a significant step towards shaping the future of education and innovation. It was an opportunity to create and consolidate relationships and reinforce the power of the community involved in the project.

In a global meeting where “impact” was the leading word, it made sense to share with the ECIU community The Impact Plan, introducing participants to a framework that helps individuals in better aligning their desired repertoire of skills and project ambitions (their WHYs) with the UN SDGs and the three main sustainability dimensions: environmental, economic and social. A small and promising network seems to have emerged from this meeting.
