Short Intro

The energy crises and war have underscored the need to change our living style, consumption habits, learning methods and tools. The transition towards future education is according to the Unesco thematic action track 4 encompassing digital transformation which  harnesses technology as part of larger systemic efforts. Making technology more inclusive, equitable, effective, relevant, and sustainable.

What should we expect for future learning ecosystems? How “smart learning ecosystems” are changing? How such changes may be related to the achievement of “a better learning for a better world” as a contribution to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ? How will they contribute to the reduction of inequalities and, at the same time, to the empowering of each individual according to his expectations and talents?

However , such transformation has to take the environment into account. The sustainable development goals (SDG) do not concern only the industry and economic transition but also learning institutions. It is called twin transition. The twin transition means digital technologies playing a key role in achieving climate neutrality. These transformations have an effect on learning and needed skills; to adapt to a rapidly transforming technological reality and labour market, as well as green skills and climate awareness. The topics need an in-depth discourse on their environmental friendliness and the methods we, as teachers, facilitators and learners, use, adapt and design (see, e.g., Unesco Leading SDG 4 goals). As societies change, these also affect learning approaches, models and methodologiesbest suited for appreciated values such as equity, inclusion, quality and relevance to mention a few values frequently described concerning education. These values mean to mobilise action, ambition, solidarity and solutions to sow the seeds to transform education in a rapidly changing world. The Unesco paper “The futures of education for participation in 2050” paves the way to deal with the change and ambiguity of the current and future times.

The complex questions of when, how and why to use digital technologies in and for learning can be approached through multiple perspectives and angles: values; informal, formal, and non-formal learning settings; infrastructural and systemic as well as technological views. The general topics of the conference reflect the above-mentioned different perspectives aiming to provide in-depth discourse among academics, students and practitioners. SLERD 2023 is proud to invite colleagues – researchers and practitioners – from all over the world to share the efforts concerning the development of smart learning ecosystems that drive towards green and digital transformation where learning ecosystems, approaches, methods and tools promote smart learning but are also environmentally friendly activating citizens, and in the promoting social innovation and equally accessible quality education.

Topics of interests

SLERD 2023 is proud to invite colleagues – researchers and practitioners – from all over the world to share the efforts concerning the development of smart learning ecosystems and, contributions on how to build together a brilliant post pandemic future, where smart learning ecosystems and smart education will be even more central in the education of future citizens, and in the promotion of social innovation and territorial development.

Communication Futures

Technologies and more recently, digital technologies, shape the ways in which we communicate. However, with the onset of COVID-19, key sectors like education and healthcare were required to re-evaluate how traditional services and communication models were delivered and to find different ways to remain connected. In many ways this has opened a door to a range of possibilities for communication models, and what has become apparent is just how important reliable and robust communication systems are for the wellbeing of people and societies.

For this special edition, we explore how we might shape future communication in form and structure by considering the opportunities afforded to us by digital and technological networks. Evolving environments and technologies are reshaping sectors like medicine and healthcare,
transport, and education and revealing the importance of connection to the network, but more importantly to each other. It is digital networks that provide us with the means to connect widely and more deeply, and which can keep us safer and improve our wellbeing. However, heavy reliance on digital technologies comes with risk and may introduce new or expand the existing
barriers they seek to dismantle. In this light, critical discussion is necessary about how Communication Futures that are technologically enabled can, and should, be shaped. What seems relatively clear is that approaches to the design of Communication Futures that are people focused and participatory are an opportunity to provide more inclusive and equitable access to communication methods and materials. They are also a means to intentionally connect people and groups that may be marginalised or that experience marginalisation as a result of exclusionary communication systems, practices, and networks.

We invite manuscripts that explore Communication Futures by discussing where they could go, challenging the directions they are going, and/or unpacking the evidence we have, or do not have, to inform responses.
Submissions may evaluate existing methods and systems for communication, report new experimental data, or evaluate the application for use of emerging technologies and communication platforms. They might explore the translation of big data or how information is shared, how people use visual communication within physical and networked environments, the role of visual communication in machine learning and artificial intelligence, or the value of simulations and virtual / augmented realities in communication systems.

We encourage submissions of long papers of up to 6,000 words and short papers not of more than 3,000 words. Long papers will be Research Reports that document new experimental data or evidence, or they will be Informed Hypotheses that present novel, meaningful, useful, and applicable theories for communication by building on existing evidence and/or existing theoretical knowledge – including knowledge from fields outside design. Short papers in the form of Theoretical Hypothesis may be more speculative and present a critical argument for Communication Futures that specify particular gaps in knowledge and point to needed research. Topics may include, but are not limited to, explorations of verbal and/or nonverbal communication systems, changing reading activities and environments, or the wider application of communication systems and technologies in sectors such as education, healthcare, or transport.

It is impossible to escape discussions of the impact of COVID-19; however, we would like to note that this Special Edition does not aim to focus on communication outcomes resulting from adaptation to the COVID-19 world specifically. It does not exclude them, but we think this context has forced a way of seeing that presents an opportunity to rethink and implement new communication experiences. It is these futures we aim to explore here.

Both long and short submissions should present research rigour, detailed methods for data collection and analysis, and evidenced outcomes. *Visible Language* guidelines can be found at

Multimodus’22 – 1st International Conference on Sound and Image in Art & Design is an academic event dedicated to sound and image studies in the context of Art & Design. It aims at bringing together researchers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and educators to discuss the theory and practice of the audio- visual experience, spanning from purely artistic perspectives to industry-driven endeavours.

The conference takes place at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre. It is organized by the Department of Arts, Design and Animation, from the School of Technology and Management.

The guiding theme for this year’s edition is “The creative process: reflections on contemporary creativity”: what does it mean to be creative in the age of creativity, how ideas emerge, serendipity vs systematization, creativity-sparking rituals, ideation technologies and everything in between. For a comprehensive list of the conference’s topics, check the submit page.

The conference’s program blends scientific panels, workshops, cultural events, and social gatherings, expecting to appeal to an eclectic audience, beyond the academic walls.

The event’s official languages are English (main), Portuguese and Spanish.

These are still times of uncertainty. Although the event is planned to happen in the physical world, online participation is accepted.
