On the 2017/2018 FCT R&D Units Evaluation, DigiMedia was evaluated by the Digital Services panel and our result (VERY GOOD) was one of the two best in this panel, who scored Digimedia as follows:

On June 25th, 2019 it will take place the 1st Annual LOCUS Seminar, entitled Amiais’ Cultural Heritage. The Seminar will have the talk of Daniela Petrelli, Professor at Sheffield Hallam University, specialist in novel forms of interaction design that combine digital technology with product design, also known as Tangible and Embedded Interaction.
The objective of the Seminar is to present the first year results of LOCUS project, with spaces for reflection on its main scientific areas: cultural heritage, internet of things, augmented reality, intergenerational, gamification, among others.
The target audience of the event is the academic community, as well as specialists who are interested in the topics that are going to be discussed and can intervene in order to contribute to the enrichment of the event and, consequently, the project.
The event will take place at the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro, room 40.2.15, between 2:00 pm and 6:30 pm, under the scientific organization and moderation of Professor Lídia Oliveira and Professor Ana Carla Amaro.

SCIENTIA holds another edition, May 15, at ISCA-UA, organized by DigiMedia researcher João Batista and Professor Alberto Costa. In this edition, the keynote speaker is Professor Penousal Machado coordinator of the Cognitive and Media Systems group and the scientific director of the Computational Design and Visualization Lab. of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra, which addresses the theme “Artificial Intelligence: Fake it until you make it?” . Research work developed in the context of the ISCA-UA will be presented.

eHealthResp – Development and validation of e-Health tools to support clinical decision and patient empowerment in respiratory infections: randomized controlled cluster trial.
Antibiotic resistance is one of the major public health problems world-wide. Inappropriate use of antibiotics is currently regarded as the main determinant of such resistance. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of e-Health tools to support clinical decision and patient empowerment in upper respiratory infections management. We will carry out a cluster randomized controlled trial covering all general practitioners and community pharmacists in Centre Region of Portugal, to prevent cross-contamination between groups, allocation will be performed on the basis of clusters rather than individuals. The centre region it will be divided into eight spatial clusters, accordingly with our previous studies (PTDC/SAU-ESA/105530/2008). It will be designed a reinforcement intervention that will consist of group outreach visits, an online course, a clinical decision support system for the physicians and pharmacists and also an e-Health tools for patients.

DigiMedia – Digital Media and Interaction Research Centre, from Department of Comunication and Art (DeCA), hosts the event “Internet Day 2019” to celebrate the Internet day with the theme “Interaction Culture”.
The day’s schedule includes, during the morning – a talk by Jeffrey Bardzell Professor of Informatics and Director of the HCI/Design program in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University-Bloomington and a round table discussion comprised by Emília Duarte (Assistant Professor of Ergonomics in Design at Universidade Europeia and Director of the research unit UNIDCOM), Heitor Alvelos (Professor of Design and New Media at the University of Porto and Director of ID+: Institute for Research in Design, Media and Culture – Universidade do Porto), Jorge Rosa (Assistant Professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and Licínio Roque (Assistant Professor at University of Coimbra and Senior Researcher at CISUC – Center for Informatics and Systems).
In the afternoon, project presentations will be made by students of the degree in New Communication Technologies and a debate with guest companies. Following that, a “speed dating” activity will be performed in order to promote connections between students and companies in Sciences and Comunications Tecnologies areas.

Prof. Fernando Ramos, coordinator of the work package 3 in the CeNTER research project (Community-led Networks for Territorial Innovation), participated as an invited external expert at the International Workshop on Smart Technologies for the City: EU, Russia and the countries of Central Asia cases, organized by the CoHuSC-Co-creation of Human Smart Cities project co-financed by the European Commission/Erasmus + Jean Monnet Program, held at the Tomsk Polytechnic University (UPT), Tomsk, Russia, from 25 to 27 April 2019.

On April 25, Prof. Fernando Ramos presented an invited talk entitled Designing a Digital Platform to foster Territorial Innovation at the Tomsk Polytechnic University (UPT). Being an invited speaker at a meeting with UPT post graduate students, university that integrates the small group of research universities in Russia, Prof. Ramos discussed the concept of the digitally-mediated platform that addresses territorially-based innovation, which is being developed under the CENTER research project.
On the second day of the International Workshop, his participation included panel discussions on territorially-based innovation experiences supported by digital media in Europe, Central Asia and Russia, in which the initiatives that were undertaken by the CeNTER program were shared and highlighted. Other interventions focused on ongoing research in various Russian territories (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tomsk and Novasibirsk) and in the capital of Kazakhstan (Sultanor, formerly Astana).
Finally, on April 27, Prof. Fernando Ramos participated in a meeting with citizens from Tomsk (young students, adults and seniors), during which community problems and needs were discussed, as well as participatory co-creation of solutions based on their active engagement within the city.

At the invitation of the European Commission’s Active and Assisted Living programme, Paula Alexandra Silva conducted an interactive workshop entitled “Designing for communities, with communities”. This workshop was supported in the Work Package 3 of CeNTER Project.
The workshop was held in Brussels on 12 of March and involved around 20 European project coordinators funded by the AAL program.
In addition to other activities, participants developed skills in user understanding and rapid prototyping.

A group of Master’s students in Multimedia Communication (MCMM) at the Department of Communication and Art (DeCA) University of Aveiro, were awarded with the prize “Hack for Good”, promoted by Fundação Gulbenkian. “Kind” is the name of the chatbot created by these students during the 48h non-stop event PixelCamp that was hosted by Bright Pixel on March 21-23, in Lisbon.
Last Wednesday was the first day of PixelCamp, a 48 non-stop event that challenged the creativity and innovation of many tech enthusiasts, students and entrepreneurs. Six Master’s students and ex-student in Multimedia Communication – António Santos, Bruno Gameiro, Francisco Regalado, Henrique Silva, Vasco Silva, Pedro Leite, and Sónia Machado, jointly with professor and researcher in DigiMedia, Carlos Santos, presented the chatbot Kind, whose purpose was to prevent cyberbullying in youngsters.
Being Cyberbullying of the utmost importance in society given its impact on the emotional state and unpredictability of human behaviour in virtual environments, the chatbot Kind aims to mediate the messages that are exchanged by different users and discourage messages that are susceptible of bullying. The project ‘Kind’ is available on [1].

The 2nd CeNTER Seminar, with the theme “Territory and Innovation: Discourses and Practices”, will be held on April 3rd at 9:30 AM in the Academic Acts Room of the University of Aveiro. The event aims to promote debates about how the various areas involved in the project.
Three panels will be illustrated:
- Intelligent Territories (9h45);
- Tourism in low density areas: opportunities and challenges (11h30);
- Network communities: the role of digital in mediation? (14h).
The launch will be in charge of the keynote speaker Álvaro Domingues (University of Porto), at 15.15. The complete program can be known through the event’s website [1].

DigiMedia researchers integrate one of the work packages of the CeNTER Program.
Mónica Aresta and Alcina Prata recently joined Digimedia as integrated PhD members.
Currently, Mónica Aresta is a PhD researcher in the FCT funded project “Gamers4Nature” and integrates the Games and Transmedia research group. Alcina Prata is an Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal and integrates the Social iTV research group.

PaGes : Post-Crisis Journalism in Post-Crisis Libya: A Bottom-Up Approach to the Development of a Cross-Media Journalism Master Program
PAgES aims at contributing to the modernization of the Higher Education (HE) sector in Libya and support the implementation of the Bologna Process through a bottom-up approach for the design and pilot of a Master Course in Cross-Media Journalism.The Master Course will target young people studying communication and young professionals, who wish to specialize in the strategic field of digital journalism. The Master Course will be designed by means of a participatory approach, involving teachers from the EU and Libya, students and journalists. Teachers will be provided with the required skills for the delivery of the Master Course through a set of capacity building initiatives: online Repository for Training Faculty, online Space for discussion and study visits at two EU universities. The length of the Master Course is of 2 years (120 ECTS).
