DigiMedia, a research centre in Digital Media and Interaction, of the University of Aveiro, accepts applications from PhD researchers within the scope of the 7th Edition of the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

 This call aims to support the hiring of PhD researchers at the beginning of their careers, for a period of 3 years, with a background in the broad area of ​​Digital Media who aim to develop their scientific research activity at DigiMedia, University of Aveiro.

The opening notice can be consulted here and applications must be submitted from September 30th to November 29th, 2024.

DigiMedia, as the host institution, is available to receive and assist researchers in preparing their applications, requesting them to fill this form.

Renata Frade, a PhD Student and researcher at DigiMedia, was one of the women interviewed by the newspaper Público. In the report titled “Sexualizadas e subvalorizadas, elas também querem protagonismo no mundo dos videojogos”, Renata talks about the theme Women in Technology and Technological Feminism.

The final event of students@DigiMedia#03 took place on July 18, 2024, with the presentation of 19 projects developed by students in the area of Science and Communication Technologies of all cycles.

More than 80 people attended the event, among participants, researchers and general public.

Students@DigiMedia aims to promote the participation of students in activities related to scientific research, and this 3rd edition focused on an interdisciplinary approach, with participants from different areas, such as Psychology, Social Sciences, Design, IT, Languages, Education, Health and Physics working together in the development of the projects.

Digimedia member Catarina Lelis was one of the University of Aveiro’s lecturers selected to represent the institution at the ECIU University Forum 2024, in Kaunas, Lithuania. Under the theme “Education for a sustainable and resilient society”, the meeting raised a few questions and proposed multiple ways to find answers. The event constituted a significant step towards shaping the future of education and innovation. It was an opportunity to create and consolidate relationships and reinforce the power of the community involved in the project.

In a global meeting where “impact” was the leading word, it made sense to share with the ECIU community The Impact Plan, introducing participants to a framework that helps individuals in better aligning their desired repertoire of skills and project ambitions (their WHYs) with the UN SDGs and the three main sustainability dimensions: environmental, economic and social. A small and promising network seems to have emerged from this meeting.

The DigiMedia researcher Patrícia Oliveira, attended the NFC – Non Fungible Conference 2024, an event about the Web3 (Blockchain, NFT, Art and Technology).

Patrícia Oliveira is also a team member of the Project Blockchain.pt (Agenda PRR), and went to this conference to get to know what is being done by startups and new companies regarding the use of NFT in games, as well as to build networking in the area of NFTs in games, which is the focus of the WP4/PPS10-QUDO of the Blockchain.pt project.

The Best thesis Award 2024 for Information technology was awarded to Sérgio Oliveira, a student of the Master’s on Digital Game Development, a course supported by DigiMedia, with the thesis entitled “Virtual Reality Serious Game for Stroke Rehabilitation at Home”.

This prize is awarded by APCD – Digital Business Community, in an initiative that distinguishes the best master’ theses in three areas: Information Technology, Telecommunication and Media.

The National Press Day, organized by Associação Portuguesa de Imprensa since 2001, takes place on May 16th and 17th at Museu do Fado, in Lisbon, as a celebration of World Press Freedom Day and World Portuguese Language Day.

This year, the focus is on the challenges of the press and the Portuguese language market. The program features the participation of professionals from different areas, experts and academics, who are part of a solution for the media sector on a national and international level.

The DigiMedia researchers Liliana Costa, Oksana Tymoshchuk, Frederico Proença and Ana Rita Passos present the YoMedia project at this conference, on the 16th May.

The DigiMedia researcher, Ana Patrícia Oliveira, presented, for the first time, a communication, developed as a Poster of the Project “Jogo sério híbrido para a prevenção do cancro através da promoção de hábitos de vida saudáveis”, at the IPO Porto Summit https://ipoportosummit.pt/, which took place from 9th to 11th May 2024.

The IPO Porto Summit 2024 is an international event, part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of IPO-Porto, which aims to promote a meeting of generations and professional groups and multidisciplinary researchers in the field of Oncology, under the topic “Research and Innovation in improving healthcare in Oncology”.

NEDD – Núcleo de Estudantes de Doutoramento do DigiMedia held its first get-together, last week, on October 27th. Teachers and PhD students from 3 Doctoral programs (New Media, ICPD and Multimedia in Education) attended this informal meeting, organized by the NEDD representatives Beatriz Vieite and Dalila Martins.

This was an opportunity to meet the new first-year PhD students as well as to share experiences, and to encourage and create more connection points among students.

From 4-8 September 2023, the 18th edition of ECTEL – European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning occurred at the Department of Communication and Art, University of Aveiro. Jointly organized by EATEL – European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning and DigiMedia – Digital Media and Interaction Research Centre, this event, held for the first time in Portugal, was attended by a total of around 140 participants from 22 countries.

      

Under the motto of Responsive and Sustainable Educational Futures, ECTEL 2023 aimed to focus on teaching and learning practices in a post-pandemic education ecosystem. Within a context of new normality, there are many practices and paths being followed which, with the help of digital pedagogical and educational technologies, can support teachers and students. Bringing together participants from countries such as Austria, Estonia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, United States of America, Brazil, Japan, Portugal, Spain, among others, the conference took another step towards technology-supported learning.

Overall, ECTL had 34 paper presentations, 25 posters, 15 demos, a doctoral consortium with 13 presentations, and ten workshops, in a process that involved 551 reviews from 248 reviewers, resulting in an acceptance rate of 27%.

Lastly, at the closing ceremony, it was announced that the 19th edition of ECTEL will take place in Krems, Austria, from 16-20 September 2024.
