To celebrate the international Internet Day 2017, commemorated worldwide each May 17th, DigiMedia promotes several events on that day. The agenda includes two talks delivered by Andrea Miconi (IULM) and Paulo Monteiro (UA) that will help participants to discuss some of the main challenges about Internet evolution. During the day there will also be room for a debate with representatives of companies and a speed dating moment that will provide the opportunity for students and companies to meet and discuss possible mutual interests.

All the details about the programme of the Internet Day 2017 may be found in: http://digimedia.web.ua.pt/internet-day/

Brian Cabral, director of engineering for Facebook, visited the University of Aveiro last May 5th, 2017. Although this was a short visit, Brian Cabral delivered a talk about “The Future of Multidimensional Video Capture” that attracted a large number of researchers and students that also had the chance to exchange views with Brian.

Fernando Ramos, the Scientific Coordinator of DigiMedia-Digital Media and Interaction research centre, guided Brain in a visit to the labs of DigiMedia where he had contact with some of the flagship projects of our research unit, namely in the fields of web 2.0 digital media (SAPO Campus, GPS) and interactive TV (iNeighbor TV, UltraTV).

At lunch time Brain joined Joseph Paradiso, from the MIT Media Lab also visiting the University of Aveiro, and the members of the coordination board of DigiMedia in very stimulating discussions about the future of digital media technologies and applications.

This visit was possible due to the support from the American Corner delegation at the University of Aveiro and the USA Embassy in Portugal.

Dr. Joseph A. Paradiso, director of the Responsive Environments research group at the MIT Media Lab, has completed his 3- day visit to the DeCA and the DigiMedia research unit with an inspiring lecture delivered last Friday, May 5th, 2017, under the theme “Two Decades of Responsive Environments at the MIT Media Lab”.

Last Wednesday, May 3rd, Joseph Paradiso had already presented his first talk “Augmented Human Interaction with Nature, Buildings, and Things” that had a huge impact in the dozens of researchers and students that attended the event.

The visit of Joseph Paradiso to DeCA/DigiMedia was an intense visit that created several opportunities for in-depth discussions about the current scientific trends and challenges in the area of Internet, Internet of Things and responsive environments.

During this visit Joseph Paradiso also participated in several meetings with researchers from the DigiMedia research unit aiming at exploring scientific relations between with the MIT Media Lab, fostering new bridges for future collaboration.

This visit was possible due to the support from the American Corner delegation at the University of Aveiro and the USA Embassy in Portugal.

Take a very short look at one of Joe’s talks:

Dr. Joseph Paradiso joined the MIT Media Lab in 1994, where he is now the Alexander W. Dreyfoos Professor in Media Arts and Sciences, directing the Responsive Environments Group. In addition, he co-directs the Things That Think Consortium, a group of industry sponsors and MIT Media Lab researchers who explore the extreme fringe of embedded computation, communication, and sensing.

In this 3 days visit Dr. Joseph Paradiso will present two open conferences: “Augmented Human Interaction with Nature, Buildings, and Things” (May 3rd, 3:00pm, DeCA/CCCI Auditorium) and “Two Decades of Responsive Environments at the MIT Media Lab” (May 5th, 2:30pm, DeCA/CCCI Auditorium).

Dr. Joseph Paradiso is author of a long list of scientific publications. One recent chapter he authored about “How Humans Will Connect with the Internet of Things” may be retrieved from https://www.bbvaopenmind.com/en/article/our-extended-sensoria-how-humans-will-connect-with-the-internet-of-things/.

During his visit, Dr. Joseph Paradiso will also participate in meetings with DigiMedia researchers aiming at discussing current common research interest and fostering cooperation between DeCA/DigiMedia and the MIT Media Lab.

SLERD 2017 aims at promoting reflection and discussion concerning R&D work, policies, case studies, entrepreneur experiences with a special focus on understanding how relevant are the smart learning ecosystems (schools, campus, working places, informal learning contexts, etc.) for regional development and social innovation and how the effectiveness of the relation of citizens and smart ecosystems can be boosted. This forum has a special interest in understanding how technology mediated instruments can foster the citizen’s engagement with learning ecosystems and territories, namely by understanding innovative human-centric design and development models/techniques, education/training practices, informal social learning, innovative citizen-driven policies, technology mediated experiences and their impact. This set of concerns will contribute to foster the social innovation sectors and ICT and economic development and deployment strategies alongside new policies for smarter proactive citizens.
