The PhD thesis defense of Diogo Carvalho took place on the 12 of November at 15h00 in the Sala de Atos Académicos, at the Rectory of the University of Aveiro. The public session marked the culmination of his doctoral research and gathered faculty members, industry professionals, colleagues, and participants interested in digital innovation for maritime environments.
His thesis, entitled “Partilha e visualização de informação meteo-oceanográfica para a promoção da segurança marítima: Um estudo na Ria de Aveiro”, supervised by professor Jorge Trinidad Ferraz de Abreu and professor João Miguel Sequeira Silva Dias, introduces a low-cost technological system that leverages IoT and crowdsourcing to support safer inland- and coastal-water navigation. The research proposes a platform that enables navigators to share and access meteo-oceanographic data, addressing challenges such as poor signaling, shallow passages, and non-linear tides — factors that significantly impact maritime safety in the Ria de Aveiro and other maritime environments.
The defense underscored the relevance of his work for maritime communities and the broader scientific field focused on digital platforms for risk communication and navigation support. Diogo’s contribution offers new insights into the integration of user-driven data, technological solutions, and maritime safety practices, marking an important milestone in his professional career.
