DESCRIPTION:Media Play is an event organized by DigiMedia – Digital Media and Interaction Research Centre\, which aims to give visibility to the work developed by students within the scope of the courses of Sciences and Technology Communication (STC)\, of the Department of Communication and Art (DeCA)\, of the University of Aveiro. \nMedia Play aims to foster the connection between academia and the local technology companies\, to bring the vision of the business sector into the academic world. \nThe event includes a competition for the best projects with different prizes\, and everyone can participate. \nMedia Play ’24 \nMedia Play ’24 is the second edition of this initiative\, which presents\, this year\, 13 projects developed by our students. \nAll projects\, previously selected by a jury\, are within the Multimedia area\, and show the development of new apps\, games\, digital platforms\, or UX prototypes. Project: Musix \nAuthor: Tomás Sousa \nDescription: React Application that uses the Spotify API to search and play music\, the Youtube API to offer the video of the searched song\, the Genius API to search for the lyrics of the searched songs and Google Firebase for user registration and storage of your favorites. \n— \n1st cycle degree in Multimedia and Communication Technologies \n3. Project: SmashStats \nAuthor: Leonardo Bastos \nDescription: Project whose main objective is to handle requests and responses from various APIs of my choice\, process this information and then build a website using React.js and Node.js that shows data from these APIs. On this website\, I have used the Tennis API and the Tennis API YouTube and showed some information about tennis players and some videos about them. I have also used Firebase and Firestore to handle the login and registration processes and to store some data that would be shown on the web page and that can also be manipulated by users through some queries. Given that only free APIs were used\, the requests are not 100% accurate\, but they work\, which was the point for this type of project. \n— \n1st cycle degree in Multimedia and Communication Technologies \n4. Project: InHere \nAuthor: José Leandro Duarte \nDescription: InHere is a geolocation web application created with the purpose of integrating the digital and spatial experience in a unique manner. In a scenario where people are connected through their devices\, this web application not only allows location-based social interaction but transcends physical barriers by providing users with the ability to explore and visualize the others’ space\, even when they are far away. \nThis application goal is to foster greater proximity between people\, not only virtually\, but also in the physical space they inhabit. By transforming geolocation into a social interaction platform\, the application seeks to create a network that not only connects people\, but also brings individual experiences within a common geographic context\, maintaining the geographic barrier (users only have access to content uploaded close to their location). \n— \n2º ciclo\nMaster in Communication and Web Technologies \n6. Project: Twovest \nAuthors: Vasco Saraiva\, Jónatas Roque\, Gonçalo Calçada\, João Paixão\, Daniela Silva\, Margarida Bicho \nDescription: Twovest is an e-commerce platform for clothes’ selling that focuses on the second-hand market and guarantees its customers the authenticity and quality of all items. In addition to offering a wide variety of products and brands\, you can also create customizable collections where you save the inspirations you see in our community’s look gallery. In addition\, it is possible to unlock new offers and coupons by interacting in the gallery or making new purchases. At Twovest\, our goal is to help brands actively contribute to sustainability. And you benefit from that. \n— \nMaster in Digital Game Development \n8. Project: River Runners \nAuthors: Bruno Miguel De Oliveira Brandão\, Daniel Oliveira Moreira\, Duarte Alexandre Luís Cunha\, Inês Sofia Madeira Santos \nSupervisors: Diogo Gomes e Tânia Ribeiro \nDescription: River Runners is a 1-player auto-scroller adventure game developed for PC. The player plays against the fast currents of the river\, controlling a cheerful and charismatic bunch of animals and trying to avoid the various obstacles they encounter. The game has a narrative mode\, where the various characters and their abilities are presented\, and an infinite mode\, which challenges the player to survive as long as possible on a route whose difficulty increases over time. \n— \nMaster in Digital Game Development \n9. Project: Virtual Reality Serious Game for stroke rehabilitation at home \nAuthor: Sérgio Oliveira \nSupervisors: Beatriz Sousa Santos e Bernardo Marques \nDescription: Stroke is one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide\, with consequences that can lead to physical and cognitive disabilities. In this way\, rehabilitation plays a central role in the lives of survivors\, with the aim of restoring as many lost motor and cognitive functions as possible\, and increasing the quality of life of survivors. However\, the way in which these treatments are carried out relies on conventional methods (focused on repetition of movements)\, which easily lead to demotivation and social isolation on the part of the patient\, often resulting in depression and anxiety. Considering this problem\, this work proposes the use of Virtual Reality and Serious Games as a complementary methodology for cognitive and upper limb rehabilitation of stroke survivors. The observation of these phenomena could recently be reinforced during the social isolation resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. In the most critical period\, the consumption of television content increased among older people\, as well as the adoption of other technological resources aimed at entertainment or social interaction. At the same time\, advances in Artificial Intelligence and Big Data have allowed virtual assistants to take significant steps towards proactivity\, that is\, they have the ability to increasingly anticipate users’ needs\, instead of just reacting to them. Project: A Promoção da Empatia em Assistente Inteligentes para TV através de Comportamentos Proativos \nAuthor: Tiffany Marques \nSupervisors: Jorge Ferraz de Abreu e Rita Santos \nDescription: The integration of intelligent assistants into the television ecosystem has simplified the performance of tasks\, such as searching for content by an actor’s name. However\, despite their growing adoption\, it seems that these assistants are restricted to merely reactive behaviors and present less than human and empathetic dimension towards users. However\, in other application domains\, we have been witnessing the integration of proactive behaviors\, which can counteract these barriers and\, consequently\, improve the respective User Experience (UX). It is precisely in this context of proactivity that this research project is designed\, whose main purpose is to study which proactive behaviors can be integrated into an intelligent assistant for Interactive Television (iTV) to promote empathy and improve the associated UX and\, consequently\, its adoption in a more fluid and massive way. His academic and professional career focuses on the field of online communication\, the development of interactive projects and the world of digital marketing. He teaches subjects related to web development\, digital communication and online marketing.\n\n\nAbstract: This talk will address the saying “what goes around comes around” from a contemporary perspective\, relating it to the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It will discuss how our decisions and actions\, in the context of AI\, can have significant repercussions\, both positive and negative. Ethical and practical issues will be explored\, including responsibility in the development and application of AI\, as well as the possible associated risks. Through a narrative approach\, the aim will be to illustrate these concepts in an accessible and reflective way. The talk invites reflection on how we can more consciously navigate the current technological landscape to shape an ethical and equitable future in the field of AI.

She also works as a journalist for the Ministery of Health\, in Brazil (2012 – until now). Currently\, she conducts her Post-Doctoral research at the Department of Communication and Art (University of Aveiro). Her research interests are related to ‘communication and public health’\, ‘institutional communication and social media’ \, with emphasis on Instagram.\nAbstract\nThe main message of the book is to value the citizen as the center of the communication produced on health\, anchored in the public interest and in the quest to broaden social participation. The guide has put together four axes of suggestions for producing content: on the approach – based on scientific knowledge and accessibility; on the use of images\, with an emphasis on infographics; on the clarity of texts and on the importance of interaction with citizens and influencers. Strategies for planning and monitoring profiles are also presented. The research provided a critical reflection on health consumption on Instagram\, a private platform based on commercial interests.

His interdisciplinary work is framed by sociological\, cultural\, and psychological perspectives. Before joining the University of West London\, Dennis worked for several years as a Strategic Planner in a multinational communications and advertising agency. His research interests revolve around EDI campaigns\, audience insight and shifting consumer behaviours. Dennis’ research has been funded\, i.a.\, by the British Academy\, the Leverhulme Trust\, the History of Advertising Trust and the Centre for Ageing Better.\n\n\nAbstract\n\n\nHow does digital impact the creation and consumption of promotional content? Do new media technologies empower or debilitate advertisers and audiences? How inclusive are emerging technologies in the context of promotional communications?\nThe advertising industry has a long tradition of embracing digital as a means of tailoring and amplifying its messages. Yet the implications of new media technologies is oftentimes not fully appreciated by either brands or advertising professionals. This talk explores a selection of emerging technologies and their current and potential use in advertising. It focuses on the intersection of media technologies and promotional communications\, and shines a light at some ‘off-label’ uses of advertising and the digital.

At the same time\, Peter Brinson develops artistic work as Game Designer and Filmmaker.\nFrom his artistic work\, it is highlighted the Digital Game “The Cat and the Coup”\, awarded at IndieCade in the documentary game award category\, in parallel his works have been presented at several events and with relevant institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, Ars Electronica\, Games For Change\, SIGGRAPH\, among others. His works are widely referred to in international generalist media publications such as the New Yorker\, Forbs\, and the technology magazine Wired.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Domitile Lourdeaux\, Alliance Sorbonne Université\, Université de technologie de Compiègne – France\nModeration: Carlos Santos\, DigiMedia\, University of Aveiro\n\n\nVirtual environments allow trainees to experiment\, practice and see the impact of their decisions. In crisis management training\, in order to facilitate learning through personal experience\, it is necessary to confront the trainees with a wide variety of situations adapted to their level. To support this type of learning\, writing scenarios requires significant work.\nOne of the Interactive Narrative challenges is to be able to dynamically orchestrate these environments. In this presentation\, we will present an orchestration system aiming at a set of objectives often considered as contradictory: freedom of action\, the dynamic character and the effectiveness of the control of the scenario\, the consistency of behaviors\, the explicability of behaviors and the adaptability of the system. To maintain freedom of action and ensure the adaptability and explainability of behaviors\, we dynamically and automatically generate training situations from knowledge models that underlie the simulation. We hypothesize that it is the generative power that will achieve the variability and resilience objectives. However\, the more a system is generative\, the more difficult it is to obtain scenarios faithful to the intention of the author (narrative paradox).\nWe will present a computational orchestration model reifying cognitive models\, learning theories and narrative theories. Our model combines symbolic (knowledge models\, planning) and numerical (probabilistic approaches\, belief functions) artificial intelligence approaches.\n\n\nShort Bio\nDomitile Lourdeaux is Full Professor at Alliance Sorbonne Université\, Université de technologie de Compiègne\, CNRS Heudiasyc. Her research interests are Artificial Intelligence based Virtual Environments for training. She is vice-president of the French Association for Artificial Intelligence and coordinator of the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science specialty in Université de technologie de Compiègne. She was a member of the National University Committee (CNU) between 2013 and 2019. She coordinated several national projects: ANR VICTEAMS (training of teams to rescue the injured)\, ANR NIKITA (aeronautical training)\, ANR V3S (training on high-risk sites) and RIAM APLG (monitoring in virtual reality)\, She is scientific manager for the CNRS of the European H2020 INFINITY (coupling of virtual reality and artificial intelligence tools for the investigation of data in the fight against crime and terrorism).

He was Coordinator of the Courses of Journalism\, Public Relations and Advertising (2007-2014) and founded the Undergraduate Course in Digital Games at Feevale University. He was partner and founder of “Engenho de Ideias” Advertising Agency and Ludema Game Studio developer. He is currently Coordinator of the Master in Creative Industry at FEEVALE University in Novo Hamburgo/RS\, is Coordinator of the Laboratory of Creativity and founder of the Ibero-American Interdisciplinary Research Network in Creative Economy. He represents the University in the work groups of the Secretariat of Culture\, and in the Secretariat of Innovation of the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. \nMarta Rosecler Bez has a PhD in Computer Science in Education from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2013) with the thesis “Model for the use of technological tools in the teaching of Medicine”. Master in Computer Science from PUC-RS (2001). She is a professor at Feevale University in the courses of Informatics\, Medicine and in the Professional Master in Creative Industry. She has experience in teaching health permeated by technologies\, working mainly on the following topics: technologies in education\, simulators\, digital games and technology in health. He is a fellow of Productive Desen. Tec. and Innovative Extension of CNPq – Level 2 with the project New technologies applied to education in health and Virtual Reality in health. She participates in the Creative Industry Research Group in the research line Creative Content\, where she works on projects involving teaching methodologies\, digital games and recently in the area of Public Policy. \nAbstract \nCristiano Max presents the games sector in Rio Grande do Sul\, Brazil\, bringing the current cluster project that aims the economic and social strengthening\, through actions that stimulate the generation of intellectual capital in the sector\, the value chain\, the competitive capacity and innovation of companies and actors involved in the ecosystem\, aligned with the Strategic Planning of the Sector for 2030 developed in the GAMERS program of RS.\nMarta Bez presents initiatives for the development and use of Virtual Reality in Physiotherapy. Games were developed by an interdisciplinary team where the active participation of a physiotherapist allowed the development of a fully parameterizable game environment for trunk control exercises for wheelchair users. In a new initiative\, a hardware and game environment for respiratory physiotherapy exercises for children in the Intensive Care Unit is being developed. The game interface will be controlled by the child’s breath.

More information is available here. \nAbstract \nIn this talk\, Matteo Bittanti discusses the origins and the evolution of machinima\, a genre of video art that deliberately appropriates and repurposes video game content\, providing an overview of an ever expanding practice. Bittanti argues that although machinima emerged both in vernacular and avantgarde contexts\, it the the latter that has evolved in remarkable ways\, while the former has largely plateaued. The talk will touch upon several examples of artists engaged with contemporary machinima and chart the possible future of the medium.

She has contributed to the design and development of the Ginga-NCL middleware\, used in the Brazilian Digital TV Standard and ITU-T H.761 IPTV services. Her main research interests include multimedia systems\, computer networks\, smart grids\, IoT\, and digital healthcare. \nAbstract \nProject e-Health Rio aims at building a research and innovation network for the development of activities related to Information and Communication Technologies applied to e-health\, specifically to Chronic Diseases. The project activities are structured in five major themes\, which are: neurodegenerative diseases\, breast and thyroid cancer\, psychiatric diseases\, remote monitoring of cardiac patients and tele-health. The project team is composed of Brazilian universities (UFF\, UFRJ\, UERJ and LNCC) and international partners from the United Kingdom\, Spain and The Netherlands. The main project goals are: proposing clinical decision support systems; proposing multimedia cognitive exercises with sensory effects to aid health therapies; proposing new techniques for analysis of thermographic images for detection of breast and thyroid tumors; development and application of pattern recognition techniques\, using artificial intelligence mechanisms to predict psychiatric symptoms; proposing new communication protocols for wireless body networks for efficient monitoring of cardiac patients; and development of support systems for teleinter-consultation. This talk is focused on the use of interactive media for healthcare therapies\, using multisensory experiences for helping treatment of dementia and autism spectrum disorder.

Coordinates LAVID (Center for Research and Extension in Digital Video Applications)\, where he researches the following topics: digital television\, digital cinema\, distributed multimedia applications\, video distribution networks\, distributed artistic performances\, accessibility\, telehealth\, and blockchain applications. Worked on developing the Ginga middleware\, published as ITU-T and ITU-R Recommendations\, and adopted as a standard in the Brazilian Digital Television System and in several countries in Latin America\, whose implementation runs on about 100 million TV devices. He drove the expansion of UFPB\, foreseeing the increase from 20 to 45 thousand in undergraduate and graduate students. He also serves as a member of the Deliberative Council of the Brazilian Digital Television System Forum and a guest of Ancine’s Technical Accessibility Chamber. \nAbstract \nWith recent changes in the way media is distributed\, delivered today anywhere\, anytime\, on any device; is there still room for television systems with live content distribution from one to millions? What was the value of a mass communication system like TV in the past? Will this value be preserved in the future with communication systems promising to offer 10 Gbps transmission rate\, density of 1 million devices per Km2\, 1 mS delays with support for differentiated service and broadcast? How is the television business reacting to survive? These and other questions will be the subject of this talk.

He has written mostly about Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence and has been a Sunday artist for some years. \nAbstract \nComputer Art has now made amazing strides in comparison with its beginnings of the 1950s\, at least from a technological point of view.\nSuch evolution must have also guaranteed a transformation in the creative processes in the arts\, but whether such change has led to answers to the long-standing questions on creativity\, authorship and the meaning of art remains to be seen. He teaches History of Videogames and Interactive Narrative at Tecnocampus\, Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Game Design at UOC. He’s the author of ‘Libertad dirigida: Una gramática del análisis y diseño de videojuegos’ (Shangrila\, 2016) and ‘Cine Ludens: 50 diálogos entre el juego y el cine’ (Editorial UOC\, 2019)\, as well as the editor of ‘Pensar el juego. 25 caminos para los game studies’ (Shangrila\, 2020). His research interests are player freedom\, Zen-inspired games and slow gaming\, gêmu\, and game preservation. He is one of the founding members of DIGRA Spain. His current funded project is ‘LUDOMYTHOLOGIES: Myths and ideology in contemporary video game. \nAbstract \nAcademia is by definition an international enterprise. The search and construction of knowledge cannot be attained by one individual alone\, not by a closed community. This is specially important when dealing with games and video games\, cultural objects that come from industries that were transnational from their inceptions. But this internationality can overshadow the idiosyncrasies of the local and how local spaces come together to form uneven international networks. The interest of this presentation\, motivated by the foundation of the Spanish chapter of DiGRA and the coming release of the book “Perspectives on the European Videogame”\, is to explore the state of game studies\, or game research\, as a field from this perspective: how exactly is it international? What are the ways in which we can play it as a cooperative play and how we are made to compete? How can we be aware of the asymmetries in the design of this cooperative play\, and can they be played to our collective advantage? And what does it mean to be in the “fringes” (geographically\, linguistically\, conceptually) of game studies?

We invite you to subscribe the channel. \nHartmut Koenitz is an Associate Professor at Södertörn University in Sweden\, a visiting researcher at the University of Amsterdam\, and a visiting research fellow at Trinity College Dublin. He is currently writing a book on “Understanding Interactive Digital Narratives” to be published by Routledge. His research is concerned with the theory\, practice\, education and societal impact of interactive narratives and games. He has published over 60 scholarly publications including the co-edited volume Interactive Digital Narrative – history\, theory and practice(Routledge 2015). Koenitz is the chair of the EU COST Action 18230 INDCOR (Interactive Narrative Design for Complexity Representations) and one of the editors of the upcoming Routledge Encyclopedia of Interactive Digital Narrative. He is also the president of ARDIN\, the Association for Research in Digital Interactive Narratives. Koenitz holds a PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology on the theory and practice of Interactive Digital Narrative. Koenitz is the creator of the ASAPS authoring tool\, which has been used to create more than 150 works. He is also a visual artist\, and his works have been shown in Atlanta\, Paris\, Istanbul\, Seoul\, Copenhagen and Porto. His latest artwork\, The Multiple Lives of Walter B. is a physical installation that explores virtual biographies of Walter Benjamin. \nAbstract \nSo far\, interactive digital narratives have not yet gained full recognition as both a field of scholarly inquiry and a developed professional practice. After more than five decades of practice as well as a history of scholarly enquiry that can be traced back to at least 1985\, this is a perplexing situation. In my talk\, I will consider reasons for the status quo\, consider current initiatives including ARDIN and INDCOR and propose avenues for future work.

Graduated in Social Communication – Journalism (2009) and specialist in Communication Counseling (2011) by the same Institution. \n  \n  \n  \nVania Baldi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Aveiro\, has a degree in Sociology from La Sapienza University of Roma\, has a master’s degree in “Identité et Unité de l’homme” (CETSAH/EHESS/CNRS\, France) and Phd in “Ethics and Anthropology” from the University of Salento (Italia). His research interests are related with Network Society\, Hypermediated Space and Civic Media\, Affordance of Algorithms in Our Lives\, relationship between Immediacy and Hypermediacy in Digital Culture\, Culture and Imaginary of Consumption\, Anthropology and Epistemology of Technique\, Spreadable Media among Open Innovation and InfoWar\, Engagement and Authorship in WebDoc\, Analysis of Discourses on Technological Innovations. \n  \n  \n \n  \nLídia Oliveira (full name: Lídia de Jesus Oliveira Loureiro da Silva) holds a degree in Philosophy from the University of Coimbra (1990)\, a Master’s degree in Educational Technology from the University of Aveiro\, in partnership with the University of Valenciennes (France) and Mons (Belgium) (1995)\, and a PhD in Communication Sciences and Technologies  from the University of Aveiro (2002). \n\nHer research focuses on individual\, collective and institutional behaviour on the internet. The areas of interest are: Social Network Analysis\, Cyberculture Studies\, Sociology of Communication\, Science and Technologies of Communication\, ICT and Education\, Multimedia\, Information Systems\, Digital Libraries\, Science Communication\, Communication in the Scientific Community (theoretical and empirical studies). \n\n  \nAbstract: \nhe creation and development of digital platforms dedicated to the sharing economy have generated discussions about some economic implications in the markets where it operates and social implications within the scope of its users’ experiences. In addition to the existence of a great diversity of digital services for the sharing of goods and services\, the platformization of social experience opens the way to a new set of research practices. In fact\, if the functioning of some platforms can limit researchers’ knowledge about intermediation phenomena\, at the same time\, the researcher’s skill can make some of their functionalities profitable by combining opportune methods and techniques.
